DRL TEN Pavilion design competition 2007

DRL TEN Pavilion design competition

Alan Dempsey (DRL 2002) and Alvin Huang (DRL 2004) are the winners of DRL TEN Pavilion design competition. The winning design was chosen anonymously from 28 entries by invited jurors and was selected based on the following points: constructability within a tight schedule and budget, simplicity and elegant form, effective use of material, pavilion as a continuous extension of furniture to roof structure. Follow the progress @ http://cspacepavilion.blogspot.com/

The goal of this competition is to design a small pavilion (no bigger than 10m W x 10m L x 5m H) that offers spatial experiences to DRL TEN visitors as well as passers-by on Bedford Square. The pavilion will be manufactured professionally and will be assembled by a building contractor with assistance of DRL Phase 1 students during the second and third weeks of February 2008.
Similar to many pavilions designed for expos and event spaces, the DRL TEN pavilion will be a temporary, small-scale building project, developed as a prototype for a new kind of architecture.
The winning design will be developed immediately after its selection with the assistance of the London engineering firm Adams Kara Taylor and DRL staff at the Architectural Association.

The following proposal is to celebrate and rethink the practice of design research through an exhibition and symposium organized around the work and discourse of the Architectural Association’s Design Research Lab (10 Years).
The heart of the exhibition is a demonstration the potential that a collaborative design environment has made in the both rethinking architectural education and practice. Understanding how the terms of this rethinking have evolved and the direction in which we are moving is fundamental to the DRL experiment and the role design research plays in our contemporary design culture.
The DRL proposals will look specifically at the results of 10 years of past and present graduates and staff and trace the work and its international influence. From running projects to running academic programs the influence can be seen on an international scale.
