A Plan to Connect

upper plan

The house plan is developed with the theme of connection and gathering. Among the tools used to implement this manifesto are the slated bedroom walls, the geometry of the floor treatment, the staggering of floor plate elevation, and, of course, the dining table.

-The slated walls- The slight views allowed out of the bedrooms are used as a force of connection by increasing awareness of the surrounding family interaction. The washing of light over these walls serves to diffuse light within the private space. The openness of the walls allows for the ventilation system within the roof to create a continuous plenum.

- The directionality of the floor treatment (wood flooring with spacing mimicking that of the walls) serves to lead the occupant to the gathering space at the table.

-The elevation of the various floor plates allows for increased privacy in the bedrooms and library while keeping all program within one volume open to ventilation and [restricted] lines of vision.

-The table acts as the main gathering point in the house. Formally, it is given weight by sinking the table surface to just above the floor. Seating exists just below floor level. The occupant may access the seating through the somewhat ritualized stairs or (most likely in the case of children) by slipping in directly from the floor surface. The table can be folded open and the floor slid back to reveal seating for a larger extended family.
