Mass / Skin
The Bowery Library’s form continues to advance towards a finalized form, and begins to adhere a sunlight modulating skin system.
The overall skin agenda is an analogy of the absorbing powers of the alligator skin to the absorbing powers of information within the reading room of a library. The skin system proposed would delegate space based on site pressures of Direct vs. Indirect natural light. The southern portion of the library would absorb direct light and direct it through the skin threshold to light the reading rooms and studio spaces.
The northern skin of the library would refract light, protecting the stacks and equipment in those areas. This occurs by introducing a gradation of rotation of the sunlight modulators within the skin system.
Shown below, the skin module unit is an abstraction of the logic inherent of the geometric structure of the Corundum mineral. In red, the connection piece between interior and exterior would be constructed in a semi-translucent glaze, while being angled as shown from the interior. This angle gives clear sight to the street below, accenting the looming pitch of the front facade. In blue, the sunlight modulators would rotate based on their position along the N-S axis of the site, either accepting or refracting natural light. These would be constructed as a opaque panel.
