Longitudinal Section

The lower level of space is easily read from this perspective. Where the upper level program is higher or shallower, a space is lowered into the landscape for program. As the roof membrane filters water into the building, it is circulated into the storage/treatment areas. This space is located under the folded-plate connection on either side to level out the moment of connection between architecture and earth.

The filtered light demonstrates the porous zones possible for allowing water to flow in and be collected and channeled down through the interstitial compartmentalized chambers and recirculated into use. The dry chambers become programmatic for MEP space.

Programmatic Morphology

The roof membrane started from the white rendered surface, folded accordingly to the analysis. The green rendered surface became the landscape which was created based upon a continuity of the roof planes while intentionally forming two spaces juxtaposed but at different levels. The array of landscape was created through a simple aggregation of spatial ribbons which expanded according to the program happening above. The roofscape equally created a morphology in response to the program and consequentially the landscape. The last configuration is the final weave of ribbons which led to the final qualification of point, line, plane and space. The white boxes are the dimensionally required program format which was also transposed into the final scheme.

Through a close reading of this specific species of shell, three conceptual traits [wrapping double shell, horizontal expansion and contraction, compartmentalization] were extracted and utilized to create the conceptual basis for the McCarren Park Aquatic Center.
