McCarren Park Aquatic Center - sp08jc - SWalsh
Aquatic Center located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn
This long span concrete roof structure is the enclosure for the formerly open air McCarren Park natatorium, now activated as a structural membrane as well forming a sustainable skin allowing the collection and filtration of water, wind and light.

Upper Level Plan
The poched space represents general circulation, stressing the diagonal layout of programmatic plan as well as allowing the circulation directed mainly along the two axes. The plan has a terraced layout that undulates between “ribbons.” Movement through the space is along the stairs that utilize the language of the terrace as well as along the structurally connecting ribbons.
As noticed, there are two other large parks surrounding the Aquaitic Center. The site strategy therefore was to begin to activate the paths already used, as well as allowing street access as necessary. The entire structure itself opens up on the north side to an amphitheater which encourages a unification between the parks.
Amphitheater accessible from the neighboring parks.
