Brooklyn - McCarren Park Aquatic Center
Interior Rendering of Aquatic Center, looking over from the Bleachers past the Training Pool, Olympic Pool, and Diving Pool
Ground Floor Plan, showing details of the Three Pools and additional Programs. In the drawing there is a direct relationship of two axes - the axis of the olympic pool and the axis of additional program on either end of the pool. Both axes were created from the stretching and lofting of portions of the ground. The second axis also aligns the roof and structural envelope as well as that of the diving and training pool.

Lateral Section, showing a cross section through the Olympic Pool, the Bleachers that are positioned looking at the Pool, & also showing a section through the Public Lobby, Administration Offices, Gym, Locker Rooms, and Press Box.
The Wall section is showing a double layered system which allows MEP and light to pass through the structure. It also allows the structural load to carry from the top of the structure all the way to the ground. The pre cast conctrete system is made up of s “Y” connection and a main thick structural membrane. They use a butt joint connection to create a smooth transference of load and appearance.

Midterm Presentation; overlapping of sectional information is extruded to created lines of landscape. These lines are then used and stretched to form overlapping pockets for areas of program. The areas that are created are then used to act as a buffer to help cushion the forces of the structure. This pillowing effect is similar to the way the roof structure’s double layer system works. By creating double layers throughout the project one is able to create a stronger and more stable structure and also be able to house program and MEP.
I analysed the natural shell of the Bivalve; this led to a rendered model study. I pulled out three rule sets from that study, they are the Geometric Radial Growth, the Self Intersecting Point and the Temporal Layering. By projecting & sectioning the 3d model of the bivalve shell I was able to start folding them to become the double layered system which was carried throughout my project.
