Brooklyn - McCarren Park Natatorium Integration
The project proceeded from a developmental exercise that begin to establish form. The development of the long span configuration would then go through a series of alterations and refinements that would enable it to critically approach integration into the site and into the neighborhood at large.
Along with the prescribed program for the site, a large scale Natatorium including an Olympic sized pool and diving pool, the decision was made to include a number of other large scale public programs. The site in its current state, an abandoned public pool, doubles as a concert space in the summer. There was also an understanding of a lineage of a certain public and monumental quality of what the site once stood as - not simply as a public pool but as a place of mass gathering.
The first iteration of refinement responded to the necessary need for the new construction to harness the natural resources afforded to it, at the scale of an individual structural roof span. The section was refined to work as both a way to channel rain water down to the ground in a controllable method for collection, and as a way to deflect direct sunlight for a diffusely lit interior.
The second iteration dealt with the refinement of the aggregation of the individual structural members. In attempting to continue the existing site condition and concept of the site as a public gathering space, a specific strategy was developed to attempt to enliven both the neighborhood and McCarren Park at large. Each of the large scale public programs would be woven into the site using the conditions of the formed geometry of the structural roof spans, and integrated into the existing physical and conceptual conditions.
