Transition from Form to Architecture - McCarren Park Natatorium
Every natural form has its functions.
The task of this semester was to control exotic aggregation form generated by analysis of natural structure, to provide a natatorium that can diffuse direct sunlight, collect water through its large surface area. The image above is 3d rendering of roof section cut that indicates how the exotic form starts to function.
First process was to study the long span aggregation form that was derived from analysis of the Murex Endive seashell.
This series of images shows the translation from ‘form’ to ‘architecture’. The reflected and diffused lighting from original aggregation turned into roof structure of the natatorium that protects the swimming pool from direct sunlight.
Longitudinal sections cut with straight line (upper image) and with a curved line (lower image) derived from the directional matrix i used to create the aggregation model. These sections indicate function of the long span roof in larger context.
This series of section cuts show the smaller context of how the roof works with three different lighting conditions:
Direct light - diffused light - darkness.
Programs underneath the roof meet their need of lighting conditions.
Terraced cafeteria and walkaway - main natatorium - first aid and other services
Plan was first derived from same template i developed for roof structure, and then adjusted to have clear distinction of programs and two different circulation by spectators and competitors. The location of two different lobbies follow the initial site analysis I’ve done, considering the coexistence of family residents, artists, and young hipsters.
