Designtex + Pratt Institute
With studio instructors Francine Monaco and Anthony Caradonna, students develop new material surface products for Designtex, manufacturer of architectural wall coverings, fabrics, and panels. By employing strategies of no-waste manufacturing and recycling, designed surfaces emerge as full-scale prototypes that explore pattern, repetition, and transparency at multiple scales while rethinking the architectural surface through environmentally responsible design methodologies.
Designtex’s second collaboration with challenged the professors and students to incorporate design innovation into Designtex’s line of Fusion Architectural Panels. Students of the Architecture and Interior Design Departments were given the mission to conduct materials and market research to develop innovative surface product ideas for commercial interior and architectural applications. Throughout the creative process raw ideas were translated into representational designs, and then into full scale real life constructions that awed the Designtex Studio. Students’ projects incorporated everyday materials and objects while staying consistent with the Designtex sustainable mission. This collection represents new finishes, patterns, and application ideas that resulted from the students’ thought-provoking work.
