Hunter Douglas Light Research Studio
Instructors Lonn Combs and Mark Parsons conduct a collaborative studio environment of material research based on the window covering products of Hunter Douglas. Using an inherently energy efficient material, new applications of architectural space are explored that expand the potential product uses from a window covering to architectural partitioning of space that emphasizes light, acoustic, and thermal properties. The research includes the development of a full scale structural weave that integrates into the lightweight fabric to achieve free-standing material configurations. In parallel to the real concerns of construction and environmental effect, the fundamental phenomena of the material and its reaction within the environment address the cultural concepts of beauty, transparency, publicity, privacy, and the ability of manipulated light to induce specific categories of ambience.
As a company built on design innovation, we have been pleased to partner with Pratt Institute to enable a new generation of architects and interior designers to experiment with some of our product materials. Using such inherently energy- efficient Hunter Douglas window fashion materials as Duette® honeycomb shades and, in this most recent studio, Silhouette® window shadings, the students have shown great imagination in their exploration of the acoustic and thermal benefits, as well as the light-enhancing qualities of these window fashions. We congratulate this new generation of talent on their creativity, imagination, and perseverance, and we salute the faculty that has so ably led them in their quest for sustainable innovation.
