exhibition:Integrate:Innovate

HeliOptix; developed by CASE / Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Opening Wednesday, October 6, 2010, 7:30 – 9pm
Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, New York City, 10012
Integrate : Innovate – building better together will be devoted to the field of construction. With the primary objective of educating the public about how buildings are assembled, the exhibition will also present profiles of innovative leaders in the building industry. Including contemporary case studies and historical material, the exhibition will chronicle how the U.S building industry has evolved and developed integrated, collaborative construction methodologies. From the physicality of curtain wall testing to the virtual space of BIM (Building Information Modeling), advances in the tools and techniques of construction will demonstrate how we are building smarter, greener and in more efficient and economical ways. The curtain wall installation will be used as a hands-on tool for teaching the general public and students about how buildings are constructed, highlighting the interconnectedness of components and systems.

Liquid Wall by Peter Arbour, Assoc. AIA, and RFR Consulting Engineers
The LIQUID WALL is a unitized curtain wall system constructed using an innovative assembly of ultra-high-performance concrete and stainless steel. It is fabricated by casting methods which afford the designer a virtually unlimited range of expressive possibilities. Its performance qualities include improvements in natural day-lighting and ventilation, direct integration with building mechanical systems and 100% material recyclability.
The Liquid Wall will be built at full-scale with the generous support of F.J. Sciame Construction Company for our exhibition Integrate : Innovate.

The Integrated Concentrating Solar Façade System licensed by HeliOptix; developed by CASE / Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
The Integrated Concentrating Solar Façade System is an architectural façade assembly that both mitigates a building’s energy impact – by diffusing light and thereby reducing heating and cooling loads – but also positively contributes to the building’s energy performance by capturing and using electrical and thermal energy. The system is equipped with solar tracking capability, which enables it to maximize solar collection for conversion into usable energy at the source and to perform as a dynamic shading device to reduce solar gain and enhance interior lighting conditions.
A full-scale portion of The Integrated Concentrating Solar Façade System will be featured in our upcoming exhibitionIntegrate : Innovate.

Innovate : Integrate – Building Better Together
Innovation in construction materials and methods has, in the past, evolved incrementally. Today, however, a surge in technological breakthroughs, shifting expectations, and a demand for high-performance materials and systems has compelled the design and construction industry to reinvent the way it creates buildings. The traditional phasing of projects and the sequential development of construction documents are no longer adequate to manage the enormous data associated with complex architectural forms, new materials, and computer-controlled fabrication. The industry has responded by adopting a nonlinear, genuinely collaborative approach enabled by powerful three-dimensional parametric design tools and Building Information Modeling (BIM) programs that generate and manage data through design, construction, commissioning, and life-cycle performance. No longer “master builder,” the architect is part of a “master team,” where information is shared across disciplines.
Innovate : Integrate presents the finalists of the AIA New York Chapter’s “Open Call for Innovative Curtain-Wall Design” alongside a selection of projects that demonstrate the latest construction methodologies. The first section of the exhibition, Innovate, highlights three priorities in building technology: material performance, energy harvesting, and daylight optimization. The second part of the exhibition, Integrate, looks behind-the-scenes of project delivery at three related topics: construction technologies, construction management, and construction logistics.
Innovate : Integrate describes two interdependent elements of a new industry standard, one that balances architectural expectations and real-world implementation to achieve an environmentally and economically sustainable built environment for the 21st century.
