This long span concrete roof structure is the enclosure for the formerly open air McCarren Park natatorium, now activated as a structural membrane as well forming a sustainable skin allowing the collection and filtration of water, wind and light. read more

Latitudinal section through the ground level Olympic Swimming Pool, raised Press Accommodations and underground Administration Offices. Roof spans create chambers that act both as structure as well as spaces to accommodate water collection, wind harvesting and natural lighting.

The filtered light demonstrates the porous zones possible for allowing water to flow in and be collected and channeled down through the interstitial compartmentalized chambers and recirculated into use. The dry chambers become programmatic for MEP space. read more

After laying out the ground program, each individual roof component was widened or heightened in response to the program underneath. Each piece nests into one another identically and the chance for water collection and recirculation throughout the exterior/interior chambers acts the same from piece to piece while expanding and stretching the volume of flow respectively. The Diving Pool initiates a heightened structural membrane, while the Olympic Pool initiates a widened structure. read more

Through analysis of the Lopha Cristagalli shell, three characteristics were extracted that considered self-intersection, skin/shell relationships, and skeletal vs. skin hybrid relationships. Looking at the shell through both a temporal and a physical scope, these three concepts carry through to initiate the conceptual beginnings of the aquatic center. read more

The concepts extracted from the shell analysis were translated into 3d and then projected into 2d. From here the shell’s characteristic traits of wrapping double shell, horizontal expansion and contraction, and compartmentalized interstitial chambers were applied to the folding process to create the structural membrane.
