Painting the Earth with tulips

Landscape of Tulips
(Photo by AP Photo/Peter Dejong. Source.)

Spotted yesterday on Der Spiegel is the above photograph of tulip farms in the northern Netherlands. No doubt artificially induced to coincide with Mother’s Day in the U.S. and in many other countries this month, we see the fields explode in Suprematist technicolor.

Nature turned into a machine, detached from the natural cycles of time and geography — in other words, detached from itself — re-landscaped here to service a $40 billion global flower industry. read more

Tesselion:Adaptive Quadrilateral Flat panelization

001

Skylar Tibbits: Tesselion is a project by Skylar Tibbits which proposes a system of flat panel tessellation derived from complex surfaces to enable ease in constructability and a directly evolved spatial environment through lighting, programmatic adaptation and structural simplicity. Each panel’s uniqueness is afforded by the efficiency of digital fabrication while coded parametric relationships allow an emergent structural efficiency, from a single panel to the complete adaptability of the surface as a whole. read more

Manufactured Landscapes

Pingmag have quickly won a place in our heart w/ a succession of 3-4  great articles.  enjoy>>>

“Canadian Edward Burtynsky takes beautiful large-scale photographs of landscapes that have been industrially altered by mankind to the very extreme. The documentary Manufactured Landscapes by Toronto-based filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal now visits, along with the photographer, places in China and Bangladesh and shows how these amazing pictures are taken. It gives you with a weird as well as surreal experience of the grotesque and grim consequences of mass production. For example, fifty percent of all world‘s computers end up in China, amongst many other used materials… You don’t have to be too ecologically minded, but this documentary will leave you thinking, no doubt. PingMag talked to Jennifer Baichwal about her consciousness-raising film.”

Exterior-Gardens-view-1–Balmori-Associates-_Mammoth-Museum

Balmori Associates and Leeser Architecture are the recipients of the 2008 AIA, New York Chapter Design Award Project Honor

The Museum, its Scientific Research Center and Laboratory were established to study not only Siberian mammoths, but also Yakutsk’s Permafrost layer: a condition that makes the ground surface prone frost heave. With each freezing and thawing cycle, soil and stones shift into self organizing patterns and creates a unique condition known only to that region. Balmori Associates developed the plan of making a permafrost landscape, and letting this respond and be derived from its context. This integration of interface between structure and nature, the trademark of Balmori Associates, provided the twist that ultimately helped the project to win. read more

The site analysis revealed inefficiencies and opportunities within the current parking and traffic structure of the area in immediate proximity of our building. My proposal uses my site data as support for the removal of a section of Lafayette Ave. to allow for a communal green space. Recent personal events have left me with a great interest in communal hubs and places of social exchange. The new open area has the potential for large-scale public events staging, recreation, and community interaction, all a result of the library project.

More on the innards and workings of the building later. The large scale concepts are being ironed out first in order to decrease the scope of concern for the project as a whole.

Advertising is a tool used for a very specific purpose. The eye is an amazing receptor of information. Whether the information recieved is stored in the frontal lobe or forgotten minutes later, the information inputted has an effect. What if the visual cues recieved by the mind were not dominatly visual, but physical?

Hematite is a form of Oxide that compound with Fe atoms. (Shown as preliminary pattern) The secondary pattern is the strict grid arrangement of O atoms and the shift of between two neighboring Fe atoms. read more
