For those of you that are not lucky enough to get out to China this summer to see the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, the next best thing is a series of images that at best can give you an idea of what we are missing out on….and in some ways…what we are not missing out on…for example the 4 + hour wait/line just to get into the expo, as well as, on average 3-4 hour wait/line to get into each pavilion.

CHROMAesthesiae: An installation of modular color

SOFTlab’s latest installation, CHROMAesthesiae, arrives at Devotion just in time for spring. CHROMAesthesiae is a flourishing landscape of color, blooming across the ceiling in high contrast-gradated clusters. This installation is an investigation on the spatial and chromatic perception of space. SOFTlab uses modularity as a core modality in order to generate complexity from repetitive form, allowing for rapid expansion or contraction of every piece created. With the motto, “everything changes,” the ability to adapt and grow conceptually underpins their entire body of work. This customizable installation is made of discrete, laser cut paper structures held together with binder clips: everyday objects are repurposed and precisely recombined. Forms evolve and shift color throughout the exhibition. More info after the break.

SOFTlab: pAlice

SOFTlab participated in Random Number’s SYSTEM:SYSTEM exhibition with their site specific installation, pAlice. The piece connects all of the openings in the room with a singular surface, turning it inside-out and giving viewers reference to the exterior of the room without physical access to it. Viewers can also look inside the surface from the outside of the room and see a space that is the surface average of these openings without actually seeing the interior space of the room. pAlice is made of over 2400 laser cut triangles and over 3600 custom connections. All of the tooling and labeling was automated using a custom written MEL script.
