In the past, we have seen the likes of Haresh Lalvani and Ron Resch producing ideas that have pushed morphology and geometry into new areas, but there was limited access to high end computing to generate or simulate them. Now with your average laptop able to process great amounts of information, things have changed not only in the way we work, but more importantly, how much we can produce and manage. Enter Daniel Piker, who is producing some incredible studies and simulations of known geometries. Daniel is using Rhino and Grasshopper to do most of these studies. Please take the time to see these amazing animations he has so carefully assembled.
We are pleased to announce the formation and beta launch of Digital Futures (DF). DF will be the home for all content pertaining to state-of-the-art software in the architectural education at Pratt Institute. It will have a physical presence in the form of consultants, workshops, lectures and symposiums. DF will also have an on-line presence (http://www.digitalfutures.info/) that will archive assets such as tutorials, writings, screen casts and other pertinent content that is to be seen as a supplement to the education of an architect.
It is still very much a work in progress but over the course of the semester the work will be sure to grow and it will give the public a glimpse into the world of Pratt Institute Undergraduate Architecture.
Crisis Modes is a one-week intensive design workshop to be held in New York City from August 17-21.
The workshop will take place in a studio setting and will be devoted to exploring relational design strategies and digital design methodologies for speculative infrastructures. New York City, with its breadth of ecological and urban complexity and in particular its urbanizing industrialized waterways, will be the primary context explored. read more
Andrew O. Payne (LIFT architects) + Rajaa Issa have released The Grasshopper Primer:2nd Edition on the LIFT architects site. It is there where you will find the PDF + source files for download.
The following text is a brief description form the site:
The second edition of the Grasshopper Primer is out and it wouldn’t have been possible without the tremendous contribution from Rajaa Issa. Rajaa is a developer at Robert McNeel and Associates and is the author of several other Rhino plugins including ArchCut and the ever popular PanelingTools. This revision provides a much more comprehensive guide than the first edition, weighing in at almost 160 pages with over 70 new pages dedicated to creating your own customized scripting components.
Brief discription from Robert McNeel & Associates– For designers who are exploring new shapes using generative algorithms, Grasshopper™ is a graphical algorithm editor tightly integrated with Rhino’s 3-D modeling tools. Unlike RhinoScript, Grasshopper requires no knowledge of programming or scripting, but still allows designers to build form generators from the simple to the awe-inspiring.
core.form-ula is the academic wing of form-ula. Our goal is to provide a platform, be it physical or virtual where architects, artists, designers, engineers, scientists, and writers can come together in collaborative space.
