I wanted to feature Ernesto Neto a few years ago when I visited his exhibition at the Hayward Gallery because it touched on many ideas critical to design. Inflatable Buildings That Could Earn $10 Million a Year
Using clever, super-green construction methods, Woods Bagot proposes a building system that would make use of the stalled sites littering New York. In New York, the most glaring signs of the Great Recession are the stalled construction sites littering the city–boarded up, dusty, and desolate eyesores.
A group of students from the University of Stuttgart have developed a method of using steel tubes and the growth of White Willow Trees to design a free standing 9 meter tall structure. The students were studying the elasticity of the trees along with its ability to be integrated into a synthetic framework to give directions and secondary support. This could be the beginnings of the idea growth of architecture..ie..the likes of John Johansen.
I came across the Ministry of Roads Building during some research and found that building was pushing some sustainable ideas back in the early 70’s….the idea of minimal contact with the ground and opening up space at grade is an interesting idea…..in this particular case its very strong formal move. more interesting info>
