Contemporary models of systems and cities rely increasingly on ‘multi-agent based’ modeling tools and theories, using digital techniques to analyze real world situations and propose design solutions. Time is naturally marked by repeating astronomical phenomena, by the daily cycle and the seasons, as nights and months come and go. To slice it into finer fractions, our forbears invented sundials, which track the movement of the shadows projected by the sun, or clepsydra, hourglass-like devices that count time based on a consistent rate of water flow. But ever since 1657, when the first watch was created, we have used the oscillatory movements of a mechanical system to do that job. The photographerGuido Mocafico, sets out in this new project, Movement, to observe these systems.
HYPE is a creative coding framework built on top of ActionScript 3. A major goal of HYPE is to allow newcomers to Flash and ActionScript to creatively play and express themselves while they are learning how to program. To get started, the user needs only the most basic knowledge of programming – variables, conditionals, loops, and functions, for example. As the user learns more about programming they can extend HYPE and thus grow their skills, while at the same time inspiring the next generation. In the past, we have seen the likes of Haresh Lalvani and Ron Resch producing ideas that have pushed morphology and geometry into new areas, but there was limited access to high end computing to generate or simulate them. Now with your average laptop able to process great amounts of information, things have changed not only in the way we work, but more importantly, how much we can produce and manage. Enter Daniel Piker, who is producing some incredible studies and simulations of known geometries. Daniel is using Rhino and Grasshopper to do most of these studies. Please take the time to see these amazing animations he has so carefully assembled.
