SHINOBU [perseverance] Art Show and Benefit
core.form-ula is curating Miya Ando’s first large-scale works show entitled Shinobu [perseverance] to open October 7 at the de Castallane gallery. Her show will be comprised of large scale steel wall works and her series of special edition hot-rolled steel skateboards created for Element. The Steel skateboards are an exact size/thickness replica of a traditional wood skateboard, hand finished with fire, acid, patina and automotive lacquer. Ando will also be showing a hot-rolled steel 36″ x 48″ x 72″ skateboard ramp/sculpture collaborative piece (created with Shelter Serra) which will be etched by muriatic acid-coated skateboard wheels ridden on the ramp. Finally, she will be creating and showing monotypes created as an interactive performance piece on the skate ramp. read more

Pratt Manhattan Gallery will present “Envelopes,” an exhibition that will explore new and sustainable potentials of the architectural surface in terms of the skin of a building and also as a sensorial space that envelops the body. “Envelopes” will feature full-scale, interactive models accompanied by architectural renderings in the form of drawings and computer animations, and documentation of the process of investigation into these models from eight international firms and designers. The exhibition will run from March 5 through May 5, 2010 and will be celebrated with an opening reception on Thursday, March 4 from 6–8 PM. The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public.
In the past, we have seen the likes of Haresh Lalvani and Ron Resch producing ideas that have pushed morphology and geometry into new areas, but there was limited access to high end computing to generate or simulate them. Now with your average laptop able to process great amounts of information, things have changed not only in the way we work, but more importantly, how much we can produce and manage. Enter Daniel Piker, who is producing some incredible studies and simulations of known geometries. Daniel is using Rhino and Grasshopper to do most of these studies. Please take the time to see these amazing animations he has so carefully assembled.
