New addition to our 3rd column scripting++ section
biothing is working on an algorithmic articulation of the interface between the material behaviors and computational instruments in an attempt to engage with complexity. Computational patterns are understood as deep in terms of their potential to produce expressions at various scales. At the core of the work is an accumulative library of scripts and methods for their transcoding, networked with constraints of materials, structure, esthetics, fabrication and assembly. Evolving algorithmic infrastructure allows a designer to work at the scale of information linked to various forms of materialization. read more

We are pleased at core.form-ula to profile Dr.Haresh Lalvani of Pratt Institute. Dr.Lalvani has spent the last 30+ years building an incredibly rich body of work that has pushed design to new limits. Dr.Lalvani has been working on many ideas through out his career, we are only able to feature a small percentage of this work within this profile. Over the course of the next few weeks, we will introduce some more experimental work coming out his Morph Studio and Milgo-Bufkin on core.form-ula.

Artists from Rodin to Warhol to Mark Kostabi have outsourced the construction of their work. Hilary Berseth goes them one better: He constructs basic frameworks of wire and wax, then lets teams of tiny yellow-and-black art fabricators finish the job. “I knew they were ordered and regimented,” the Pennsylvania artist says about his honeybees, which built the three otherworldly sculptures on view at Eleven Rivington. “I had an intuition that I’d be able to organize that, architecturally.”

Selected projects from the Fall 2008 semester’s ‘Search – Advanced Algorithmic Design’ seminar, a six week intensive seminar in the visual studies sequence at the Columbia GSAPP, taught by Mark Collins & Toru Hasegawa of Proxy. The seminar examines object-oriented problem solving and visual/spatial research within the open-source platform Processing. A video of this class’ work can be seen here.

Advanced Beauty is a wondrous new DVD compilation comprised of 18 visuals by 20 artists, or rather sound sculptures, as curator Matt Pyke of UK-based Universal Everything would say. These transient pieces made by processing are for us to see how far you can really push the aesthetics of software generated visualisations and play around with an art genre that uses the screen as canvas. PingMag lets Matt expand the concept of moving still life imagery. via pingmag read more
