Traces of an Imaginary Affair (2006) is the work of Bjorn Franke in coloration with photographer Jonas Unger. As a series of conversations have been bouncing around about scenario writing and “the counterfeit”, this seems to be a wonderful intersection where design and the material world can spawn and infinite set narratives that are all dependent on the players. I only wish there were some type of instruction set that accompanied it.

Tectonic Gradients: Karl Roarty, Scott Sorenson
Studio Critic: Michael Kubo
The project focuses on a strategic intervention into the existing CIGNA building and its reinvention through the design of a new skylit ceiling. Floor levels and spaces are reorganized based on the interaction of people rather than the linear efficiencies of the existing office space. These areas are then correlated to a folding roof geometry that drives their program, organization, and relationships through lighting effects. Spaces are organized into overlapping zones that correspond to a gradient in the roof system, from a more regular lighting grid in office areas to a deeper system of diffuse skylighting through a structural lattice over atriums and social areas. These areas of overlap create a dynamic exchange between occupants, introducing heterogeneity and varied circulation to the program. read more
