Willem van der Sluis’ Sportdomes DJI  are prison recreation spaces created from a Boolean Union of Bucky Domes. Not only are they elegant crystalline skinned structures but also open up new options in the games themselves. Below are more poetic musings on creating spaces for detention.

Generative Disruptions

Undulating rows of skylight apertures respond to the sun’s seasonal and daily cycles to produce internal spaces whose character fluctuates in time. The office undergoes a phenomenological change in its environmental qualities and performance as light defines the space. The ceiling becomes an instrument to accommodate flexible programs that can vary over time, and celebrates the difference in seasons in the rural Connecticut site through a language of geometrical profiles that is meant to generate lighting effects similar to those found in nature. The north-south orientation of the skylights optimizes the effects of seasonal and daily changes in the quality, quantity and angle of sunlight as it enters into the building for natural lighting and passive environmental conditioning. read more

The project uses skylighting to create a diverse range and flexibility of scales within an office space. Both the roof system and the program are organized through a system of gradient aggregations that responds to the global scale of the building layout and the more local needs of individual office spaces among varying businesses, departments, and occupants. Shared anchor programs are adjacent to the main circulation, while offices are arranged on a gradient from smaller group areas at the perimeter to open office space at the center. The size and frequency of skylighting varies through undulations in the roof that correspond to these office groupings, maximizing the distribution of diffuse light through the space. read more

renovation and reinvention

CIGNA headquarters x Velux 08′ midterm

Treatment of the existing building and site conditions focused on renovation and reinvention rather than demolition is the principal of our intervention. A series of concept driven procedures allows for the essential organization to be based upon people rather than the efficiency of physical matter. These areas then have a correlation to ceiling and roof geometries which drive their program, organization and relationship to lighting effects. A primary and secondary program is recognized through the resultant overlap condition of the different program typologies. This area of overlap provides for dynamic exchange amongst occupants, thus creating heterogeneity in program juxtaposition and varied circulation. Office typology can thus be generated through the use of the skylight as a means to reorganize and introduce natural light into an existing building system. by Scott Sorenson & Karl Roarty read more
