LOS ANGELES | USC | INTENSIVE FIELDS | 12 December 2009
Intensive Fields: New Parametric Techniques for Urbanism
Conference, Harris 101, University of Southern California

For some time now, digital technologies have had a substantial impact on architectural design. From the use of standard drafting packages to the more experimental use of generative design tools. But how might these digital technologies – and parametric design tools in particular – help us to design cities?

The conference brings together USC Professors Francois Roche, Marc Fornes, Roland Snooks, Qingyun Ma, Neil Leach, Roland Ritter and Anne Balsamo alongside other leading experts from the world of digital technologies, cultural theory and urban design, including Patrik Schumacher, Manuel DeLanda, Tom Kovac, Marcos Novak, Benjamin Bratton, Hernan Diaz Alonso, Elena Manferdini, Casey Reas and Greg Lynn.

Entrance is free on registration: http://arch-pubs.usc.edu/INTENSIVEFIELDS/

We are pleased at core.form-ula to profile Dr.Haresh Lalvani of Pratt Institute.  Dr.Lalvani has spent the last 30+ years building an incredibly rich body of work that has pushed design to new limits.   Dr.Lalvani has been working on many ideas through out his career, we are only able to feature a small percentage of this work within this profile.  Over the course of the next few weeks, we will introduce some more experimental work coming out his Morph Studio and Milgo-Bufkin on core.form-ula.

Hardcore:Michael Soluri on the still life of space hardware.

There is nothing more exciting than to see a set of polished tools astronauts use in there pursuit to exploring the universe.  The aesthetics of space technology have their own construct that may not be taught in design schools,  but I am sure it has influenced more professions than we can count.  I came across a recent set if photos taken by Michael Soluri, who is a New York City based photographer that had a rare opportunity to photograph a set of tools.  The photographs were taken in a clean room, upon which his equipment had to be disassembled and chemically bathed before hand and had to wear a nylon-suit, with boots and latex gloves -as not to contaminate the tools.  Please feel free to browse through his photos>>>
